Children's play area at Shishu Bikash Kendra, Pokhara

Since 1977, Shishu Bikash Kendra (SBK) has quietly transformed lives in Pokhara — offering specialized care and education to children with developmental disabilities, including Autism, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy. Almost as old as our parish itself, SBK is one of the most meaningful expressions of our church's mission in the community.

How It Began

Shishu Bikash Kendra was founded by Father Akijiro Ooki, the same Japanese Jesuit missionary who planted the seeds of St. Ann's Parish. At the request of Pokhara's Chief District Officer at the time, Father Ooki established the centre to serve children whose families had few, if any, specialized resources available to them.

Our Vision and Mission

Guided by the compassionate teachings of Jesus Christ, SBK envisions a society that fully values and empowers children with developmental challenges to reach their highest potential and live with dignity, independence, and joy. In practice, that means comprehensive, individualized care: physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy, creative therapies like music and art, life skills training, and consistent nutritional and medical support — all delivered by qualified caregivers rooted in patience and respect.

A Ministry That Continues to Grow

Decades after its founding, Shishu Bikash Kendra remains an active, essential part of our parish's outreach. It relies heavily on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and sponsors — whether that means sponsoring a child's education, donating supplies and equipment, or simply spreading awareness about the needs of children with disabilities in our community.
